DentSavant automates API 1183-aligned dent assessment — from ILI data ingestion through Level 3 FEA. Developed by engineers who built and operated a major Canadian operator’s systemwide dent management framework.
* Performance data reflects the assessment methodology validated in peer-reviewed publications. DentSavant implements and extends this methodology with significant enhancements.
Every day, pipeline integrity engineers face these challenges. We built IntegraFrame because we've been there too.
Tight regulatory deadlines with hundreds or thousands of anomalies to assess. Manual processes can't keep up.
At $50,000–$200,000 per excavation, unnecessary digs are one of the largest controllable costs in dent management. Conservative depth-based screening does not fully account for dent shape, restraint condition, or loading history.
Limited in-house resources mean backlogs grow while critical decisions wait. Senior integrity engineers are expensive and hard to find.
Audits require documented, defensible engineering assessments. Generic spreadsheets won't hold up to CER or PHMSA scrutiny.
ILI geometry, IMU data, SCADA pressure histories, and corrosion/crack listings live in silos, making holistic assessment difficult.
Modern high-resolution caliper tools detect complex multi-apex dent profiles that traditional API 1183 tools — and most software — are not equipped to evaluate properly.
Four automated stages — each building on validated, QA/QC-cleared inputs — take your caliper data to a complete, defensible assessment package.
ILI caliper profiles, optional IMU pipeline geometry data, SCADA pressure histories, pipe material properties, and crack/corrosion listings are ingested into a unified analysis database. All major ILI vendor formats accepted — Rosen, TDW, Baker Hughes, NDT Global.
A k-nearest neighbour machine learning model cross-references vendor feature listings against raw caliper data, detecting sensor bounce, channel malfunctions, and misidentified features automatically. FFT-Gaussian filtering then smooths profiles while preserving critical dent geometry.
Restraint condition is determined automatically. Strain and fatigue screening follows calibrated analytical methods aligned with API 1183. Complex features, or those that fail Level 2 assessment, are automatically escalated to Level 3 non-linear FEA.
Assessment reports, Excel summary workbooks, severity rankings, fatigue life predictions, and probability of failure values — generated automatically for every dent, organized by feature, and linked to their source data for full regulatory traceability.
IntegraFrame was founded by engineers who spent years developing and operating a major Canadian pipeline operator’s systemwide dent integrity management framework — experience that shaped and informed the enhanced methodology now powering DentSavant. DentSavant is purpose-built commercial software that implements and extends this field-validated methodology, with significant enhancements to automation, performance, and usability.
The framework was validated against 79 physically excavated dent features with NDE findings, with no false negatives in the validation study. Results are published in peer-reviewed proceedings at IPC 2022 and PPIM 2025, with co-authors from major Canadian pipeline operators.
The highest-fidelity dent assessment method — Level-3 non-linear FEA — runs automatically, generating analysis-ready models from ILI data and converging in one to three shape-matching iterations. Validated on 13 real field-assessed dents across pipe sizes from 609 to 914 mm OD.
DentSavant supports operator-controlled deployment so ILI data, pressure histories, and assessment results can remain within the customer’s environment, aligning with internal security and data-governance requirements.
Across 79 field-excavated dents compared against NDE findings, the framework produced no non-conservative results. No unsafe dent was classified as acceptable — the critical assurance in regulated pipeline operations.
In systemwide deployment at a major Canadian transmission operator, 85% of assessed features correctly matched excavation findings. The remaining 15% were conservatively flagged — never under-assessed.
Automated Level-3 FEA shape-matching converges in one to three iterations across all studied dent geometries — a significant reduction from the many iterations typically required in manual analyst-driven workflows.
* Validated results published in peer-reviewed proceedings: IPC2022-87320 and IPC2026-186220.
